Astera

Privacy policy

Effective September 29, 2026

Astera is a sky map app without sign-up. It does not ask for a name, email address or phone number, and it does not create accounts. This page explains what the app keeps, where it keeps it, and what leaves the phone.

Kept only on the phone

  • Observation log: object name, time, result, notes, and a place only when you choose to add it
  • Predictions, observations and summaries written in activities
  • Display settings and the chosen place

This data stays in the app's private storage and is never sent to a server. It is excluded from Android backups. "Delete all data" in settings, or uninstalling the app, removes it. "Export" in the log tab only hands the log as text to an app you choose.

Location

With your permission the app reads an approximate location, rounds it to about 1 km and uses it only to compute the sky. The location is never sent to a server. Without permission you can pick a city and use every feature. Whether a log entry keeps a place is your choice each time.

What leaves the phone

  • Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics, Google): when the app crashes it sends the error, device model, Android and app versions and a per-install identifier. They are used only to find and fix defects and are kept by Google for 90 days. You can turn this off in settings.
  • Content switch (Firebase Remote Config, Google): every few hours the app fetches a setting that lets us hide a wrong explanation without an app update. The Firebase installation identifier is sent with that request.

No advertising, no behavioral analytics, no selling or sharing of data with other companies. All transfers are encrypted.

Permissions

The app asks for approximate location only. Orientation sensors need no permission and their readings are used only to draw the map.

Children and students

Astera is designed to be usable in class. It collects no personal information such as names or contact details and shows no ads.

Changes

If the data handled by the app changes, this page is updated first with a new effective date.
